Prepare to be transported to a world of knights, battles, and strategic defenses as you wander through the castle's ancient walls. Aracena Castle's history stretches back to the 13th century when it was built by the Almohads, a Berber Muslim dynasty, as a strategic defensive point. After the Christian reconquest, the castle was taken over and modified by the Knights Templar and later by the Order of Santiago. Over the centuries, it served as a vital stronghold, witnessing numerous battles and sieges. The castle's strategic location provided control over the surrounding area and played a crucial role in the region's history. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins of the castle, including its walls, towers, and the remains of the church of Nuestra SeƱora del Mayor Dolor. Climb to the top of the towers for breathtaking views of Aracena and the surrounding countryside. The castle grounds also host occasional cultural events and historical reenactments, bringing the past to life. After exploring the castle, descend into the town and indulge in the local cuisine, particularly the Iberian ham and other pork products that the region is famous for.
